Espadrilles

Espadrilles are traditional lightweight footwear featuring a jute rope sole and canvas or cotton upper. Originally worn by farmers, they are now versatile for a variety of occasions. At RAG Tailors, we create espadrilles that are suitable for everything from beach walks to casual events. The simpler models are ideal for everyday wear, while the versions with platforms or elegant details are suitable for informal dinners or evening outs. They are particularly popular in spring and summer, and pair perfectly with light dresses, shorts or linen trousers.

Sustainability is a growing priority in the production of modern espadrilles. Popular eco-friendly materials include certified organic cotton, recycled canvas and natural jute for traditional soles. Some brands, including RAG Tailors, are using innovative materials such as fabrics made from recycled ocean plastic, natural rubber for outsoles and water-based inks free from harmful chemicals. Sustainably grown linen and hemp, which require less water to produce, are also popular. These sustainable options ensure comfort without compromising the durability or style of the espadrilles.

To choose durable espadrilles, first assess the quality of the stitching that joins the jute sole to the upper – the more refined and resistant, the better. Premium materials, such as those used by RAG Tailors, make all the difference: robust canvas, dense cotton or modern technical materials that are more resistant to wear and tear. Check whether the sole includes a layer of rubber at the base, which is essential for increasing durability and waterproofing. Reinforcements on the heel and toe prevent deformation. Choose espadrilles with anatomical insoles, which in addition to offering greater comfort, maintain the structure of the shoe over time.

To keep your espadrilles looking pristine, first remove any surface dirt with a soft brush. For fabric models, such as many in our collection at RAG Tailors, apply a mild solution of water and mild soap using a damp cloth – never completely submerge the shoe. For suede or leather espadrilles, use products specifically designed for these materials. Leave to dry naturally, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat, preferably with absorbent paper inside to maintain their shape. Between uses, store them in a dry place and apply a fabric protection spray. Avoid washing them in the washing machine, as this can damage the structure and the characteristic jute sole.

Espadrilles were originally designed as casual footwear, ideal for urban use and short walks. For long walks, traditional espadrilles with jute soles may not provide adequate support. However, modern RAG Tailors models incorporate technologies that significantly improve comfort for extended wear, such as ergonomic insoles and reinforced soles with non-slip rubber. However, for trails or rough terrain, we recommend specific walking shoes. Espadrilles are perfect for everyday city wear, walks by the sea or casual events where comfort and style are the priority.

Espadrilles for men and women share the same basic structure of jute soles and fabric uppers, but they do have some differences. Women’s models generally offer a wider variety of vibrant colors, elaborate prints, and decorative details such as embroidery or appliqués. Heels, wedges, or platforms are also common. RAG Tailors’ men’s espadrilles tend to feature more minimalist designs, with neutral colors or dark tones and more understated finishes. Structurally, men’s models tend to have a wider, straighter shape, while women’s models can be narrower and more anatomical. However, many contemporary designs are unisex, focusing on comfort and versatility.

Recent trends in espadrilles combine tradition and innovation for the upcoming season. Models with higher platforms stand out, providing comfort without sacrificing elegance. Natural fabrics dyed with plant pigments and recycled fibers are on the rise, reflecting the growing concern for sustainability. RAG Tailors incorporates earthy tones and soft pastels into its new collection, as well as minimalist geometric and floral prints. Hybrid models that combine the classic jute base with modern elements, such as Velcro or elastic fastenings, are gaining popularity. There is also a return of high-top espadrilles with leather details, elevating this traditionally casual footwear to a more sophisticated level.
